RIASSUNTO IN INGLESE GULLIVER’S TRAVELS: IL PRIMO VIAGGIO, LILLIPUT (1699 – 1702). The main character of the novel, Dr Lemuel Gulliver, narrates the story, set between 1699 and 1715. Gulliver’s first adventure is the most popular: the doctor, sailed off from Bristol, is washed ashore after a shipwreck and finds himself in an unknown country island, Lilliput. The inhabitants are very tiny – they are about 15cm tall – but they succeed in tying him, afraid that the man could be a monster who wants to destroy their land. After giving assurance of his good behaviour, he is brought to the town and he is given a residence in Lilliput. Here he meets the King of Lilliput, who has a great idea: using Gulliver as a weapon against the isle of Blefuscu, whose inhabitants are enemies of Lilliputians. The two nations are against each other because of a deep political rift: they disagree about which end of an egg a person breaks. Gulliver accepts his mission but, then, because of a series of misunderstandings, including “making water” in the capital though he was putting out a fire saving countless lives, he is charged with treason and sentenced to death penalty. Yet, Gulliver is able to escape on an abandoned boat: he is rescued by a passing ship, which safely takes him back home.
GULLIVER’S TRAVELS, RIASSUNTO IN INGLESE SVOLTO: IL SECONDO VIAGGIO, I BROBDINGNAG (1702 – 1706). Gulliver is ready for another adventure and this time, after a thunderstorm, he finds himself in an island with his companions. Here they meet the giants, the Brobdingnags. They are 22 m tall: seeing Gulliver, one of them picks him up and brings him at his place. Later, he gives Gulliver to the Queen of Brobdingnag who uses him to entertain the court and commissions a small house to be built for him. Living among the Brobdingnag is an unpleasant experience for the protagonist, especially because of their smell and repugnance, but also for the lifestyle he is obliged to follow. Furthermore, everything is enormous for him, even animals, which are dangerous considering he is smaller than them. Yet, he is saved by an eagle: on a trip to the seaside, his traveling box is seized by a giant eagle who drops Gulliver and his box into the sea where is picked up by some sailors who returns him to England.

GULLIVER’S TRAVELS, RIASSUNTO IN INGLESE: IL TERZO VIAGGIO, LAPUTA (1706 – 1710). Gulliver embarks again, this time going eastward, towards India. Gulliver’s ship is attacked by pirates and he is marooned close to a desolate rocky island. He is rescued by the flying island of Laputa, a kingdom devoted to the arts of music, mathematics, and astronomy but they use them for useless ends. Gulliver tours Balnibarbi, the kingdom ruled from Laputa, and the island of Glubbdubdrib, where he meets lot of historical personalities, including the ghost of Julius Caesar, Brutus, Homer, Aristotle and René Descartes. Then, on the island of Luggnagg, he encounters the struldbrugs, people who are immortal but who do not have the gift of eternal youth, so they are very old. At the end of his journey, he returns to England, after visiting Japan.
GULLIVER’S TRAVELS, RIASSUNTO IN INGLESE: IL QUARTO VIAGGIO, GLI HOUYHNHMS (1710 – 1715). Gulliver returns to sea as the captain of a merchantman, but his crew commits mutiny and abandons him in a landing boat. Then, he meets the Houyhnhnms, a race of talking horses. They are the rulers while the deformed creatures called Yahoos are human beings in their base form. Gulliver bonds with the educated and wise horses, he learns their language and finds out that they don’t have any word to describe feelings, insincerity or hypocrisy. He also explains the English Constitution to them. Their society is very peculiar: they have neither religion nor grief, while their social structure is based on families with two children, a boy and a girl. Yahoo, instead, means something negative (like their servants). Gulliver admires them, so he asks their permission to live among them. However, an Assembly of the Houyhnhnms rules that Gulliver, a Yahoo with some semblance of reason, is a danger to their civilization and expels him. He is then rescued against his will by a Portuguese ship. He returns to England, but he is unable to reconcile himself to living among Yahoos, so he becomes a recluse, avoiding his wife and son, and spending most of his time speaking with the horses in his stables.
