brother William became an important philosopher and psychologist. James was educated in Europe and in 1862 he went back to the States and entered Harvard Law School which he later left to concentrate on writing. He contributed regularly to several periodicals and in 1870 he went back to Europe where he visited Italy for the first time. This was to become the setting of several of his novels. He finally decided to settle in Europe in 1875, living first in Paris and then in London where he spent more of twenty years. In London he met many of the major intellectuals and writers of the time.
