merchant family. At the age of twelve, however, he was compelled to leave schoo l b y his fathe r’s de ath and the difficult financial conditions of his family. He took various jobs and in 1839,following his restless nature, he signed on a merchant ship and from then on he travelled widely and experienced all kind of adventures. In 1841, he sailed on his first voyage as a member of the crew of the whaling ship Acu shn e t.
