army officer. He was sent to school in Yorkshire, where he came under the p ro te ctio n o f his fathe r’s re latives, u po n whom he was dependent for the expenses of his education. He graduated at Jesus College in Cambridge; later he took holy orders and became vicar of Sutton-on-the-Forest in Yorkshire. Soon afterwards he married in York; though he was a clergyman, his marriage was not a success precisely because of the attention he paid to his many female friends.
