in London and Cambridge, he was able to rise from his humble parentage and become one of the most important man of his day in England. By virtue of the influence of a distant relative, but much more by his efficiency, loyalty and faithfulness to duty, he was appointed Secretary to the Admiralty, Member of Parliament and President of the Royal Society, and was chosen as a confidant both by Charles II and James II. He was a man of many interests, fond of music and a collector of books, manuscripts and pictures. When he died in 1703, he left his books and collections to Magdalen College, Cambridge.
