family, he had a difficult childhood, marked by the death of his father when he was only a child, and by the malnutrition and poor eyesight. He left school a the age of thirteen, still unable to read fluently and took any job he could find. He continued to study on his own. In his early twenties he joined the Gaelic League, whose aim was to spread Gaelic language and stimulate interest in the native traditions of I reland.
