IL FANTASMA DI CANTERVILLE: RIASSUNTO IN INGLESE DI THE CANTERVILLE GHOST. The Canterville Ghost is set in England, at the end of the 19th Century. Hiram Otis is the U.S.A. Ambassador who buys an English castle near the town of Ascot, in Berkshire. In addition to Haram, the Otis family consists of his wife Lucrezia, his eldest son Washington, his shy fifteen-year-old daughter Virgina and two disobedient twins, Stars and Stripes. The family moves into Canterville Chase (it is the name of the castle), despite warning from Lord Canterville that the house is haunted. The ghost of Sir Simone de Canterville lives in the castle: even if none of Otis family believes in ghost at first, later they have to admit the presence of the spirit. Sir Simon was a ill-tempered gentleman from the 16th Century, who is doomed to spend the eternity within the castle until an ancient prophecy is accomplished. This prophecy could break only if a young man or girl with a spotless heart shed tears for a sinner.

Despite Sir Simon’s efforts to appear in the most gruesome guises, the Otis family refuses to be frightened, making the ghost feel helpless and humiliated. One of the reasons of the hostility between the spirit and the family is a blood stain on the carpet in the sitting room. This stain is the evidence of Sir Simon’s wife Lady Eleanor’s death. Sir Simon killed his wife by impulse because she was unable to finish her household chores. Washington, Mr Otis’s son, suggests the stain will be removed with Pinkerton’s Champion Stain Remover and Paragon Detergent and he tries to fix the problem with it, despite warning from the housekeeper, Mrs Umney’s, that the stain cannot be removed. The stain always reappears indeed.
IL FANTASMA DI CANTERVILLE, RIASSUNTO IN INGLESE: VIRGINIA E SIR SIMON. Unlike the rest of the family, Virgina Otis does not dismiss the ghost, but she takes him seriously. She spends lot of time with him and listens to him, while Sir Simon exposes his vulnerability to her. He tells her that he has not slept in three hundred years and wants desperately to do so. Furthermore, he reveals to Virginia the tragic death of his wife, asking her to weep for him, to pray for him and to accompany him to the angel of death and beg for Death’s mercy upon him. She weeps, prays and disappears with Sir Simon through the wainscoting and goes with him to the Garden of Death and bid the ghost farewell. Then she reappears at midnight, carrying jewels and news that Sir Simon has passed on the next world and no longer resides in the house.

Several years later, Virginia is married to Lord Cecil and she tells his husband that Sir Simon helped her understand “what Life is, what Death signifies, and why Love is stronger than both”.
